Hi Woodknack,
Dennis' Supercam is a software (SW) package that will allow you to work
from DXF, and HPGL files created by CorelDraw and AutoCad. Used to run
a lot of routers, and I believe sold with the Taig mill (?).

I believe there is a limited demo available to download.
Generally, you draw your tool paths in a CAD program (many are free),
and then generate Gcode files using a DXF to Gcode file converter. HPGL
files can also sometimes be used. Intellicad, TurboCad come to mind.
A free controller to try (OK, $10 with registration gets you source
code) Dave's TubroCNC:

... and you can step up from there. Vector CAD/CAM + CNCpro, to name a
few...
