The first thing that comes to mind is when you program your part, you
program the actual part dimensions and then you use G41 or G42 to offset the
tool. That means that you can use any size tool that is convenient. Also you
can lie about the tool size, to the control, and compensate for tool wear or
deflection. You can tell the control that the tool is a .505 diameter and
then run a finish pass telling the control that the tool is .500 diameter.
The biggest advantage to diameter compensation is that you don't have to
repost the part every time you change a tool.
