Hypertherm used to have a chart in their manual that showed the voltage
across the arc relating to distance from the metal being cut. I imagine some
of the other suppliers do too. The welder that shopbot is using has a
terminal in the unit that has the voltage on it. They put a small board in
with a circuit, probably similar to the one Mariss is working out, and
monitor the voltage compared to the optimum voltage. This then sends a
signal out to the shopbot software that raises or lowers the Z axis.
