It would probably zip down *much* smaller though, and probably not
be so different depending on how it was written.

A real ~3M gerber file - 167,000+ lines that look like this:

Using Winzip, I get 543K zipping this down, so a 5:1 reduction, and an 8M
uncompressed or over 1,000,000 "lines" (as above) should fit on a floppy.
