Resolver resolution and DC amplifiers

I am going to put brushless motors on my series II.
There are probably 14 different methods of
commutation, but for my purposes there are 4:
sensorless, hall effect, halls with optical encoder,
and resolver. The resolvers offer the best
commutation, but do they really have the resolution I
need if I am going to go with a step and direction
interface? I have 2-1 reduction driving what I think
are 5tpi ballscrews.

I am going to go full servo with linear encoders as
finances allow, but for now I want to use step and
direction. I got sniped last night on the linear
encoder for my spindle.

Also, I have a PMI/Kollmorgen AXA-180 dc amplifier.
Anyone know anything about these? I was thinking
about using it on my cnc router. Specifically, they
have an "ac" input and an "ac 115" input. I assume
they have a transformer for the control circuitry
running off of the ac 115 input, and I am assuming
that the ac input is for powering the motors, but I
don't want to experiment without more "knows" and less
"assumes"

Eric
