The good design is simple. And, It should be even more simple of an idea to
existing extrusion makers.
Make all of your extrusion lineup with center openings capable of press fitting
Linear bearings. They get pretty standard in size. You just cut off a length or
extrusion for your bearing slide. Pound a bearing in each end if you prefer one
long bearing. Consider 80/20's 1"x2" rail with a round hole instead of that
square thing.
When an individual needs to make stands for the linear rail, he just wacks off a
piece, to the length he'd like it to be wide. Then he would turn some simple
sleeves with the I.D. to fit snugly around the linear rail and the O.D. to fit
snugly into the extrusion. The sleeve could be bonded in and a setscrew added to
hold the rail in place.
I do not think today it would be a problem if you had to use metric bearings
inside of a fractional extrusion. Anything to make this concept work.
