Hmm, A book publisher. I must have missed the section on
PCB manufacture? Alan, would you be able to tell me how
to get to that section.

The only PCB manufacturer I've ever used is Omnigraphics, because

1. they're local and
2. the boards always look exactly like what I think they should.

so I can't comment on any of the others around. What I can say is this ..

Omni has a deal - their "No Tooling" option - that I have made EXTENSIVE
use of; a pair of 5"x8" double-sided PCBs, plated-through, silkscreened
and soldermasked that can be had in 5 working days for $150.00 CDN
(about $100.00 USD)

( Four layer boards are also possible as "No Tooling" for double the
price of two layers, as are 5"x16" two and four layers, for a
corresponding increase )

There are a few caveats as far as the smallest hole size and number of
different drill sizes, but that's about it.

You DON'T have to worry about plating size .. they take care of that.
Describe the final hole size ( as you would normally expect to do ) and
THEY'LL figure out just how much larger to predrill it to account for
plating.

One last note. More and more services accept files in GCPrevue format
and I would STRONGLY recommend that prospective PCB designers learn how
to use GCPrevue and then submit their jobs in this format.

Finally, I have no formal affiliation with Omni (although I do have an
informal relationship), except as a longtime loyal customer.
