variable speed transformer ?

Hi guys,

it's Monday morning and my brain is not totally in gear as yet.

the recent discussions regarding power supplies and transformers and
all had me thinking that what you put in is proportional to what you
get out.

most transformers are 115 in and 48 out or some pre-set values. then
others have additional terminals on the input lines that are either
wrapped a few extra turns or a few less turns to allow 125 in and 48
out or 105 in and 48 out.

so why not vary the actual power input with something like a variable
speed drive? it can create a specific voltage and frequency at the
turn of a knob.

for that matter, isn't the output of a VSD D.C. already ? Couldn't
it be used directly.
