Hi Ken,

I would look around the manufactures of HEDs and see if a spec can be found
that will do the job. Two years ago I bought some surplus servo motors @
$3.95. The encoder wheels are 400 line at about 1" dia. The HEDs them selves
can be taken apart I had to do this to find out the wiring. As I wish to use
them as is I'm not inclined to experiment with them. There are metal wheels
about that go up to 2000 lines on this diameter. What I'm trying to say is
just because a HEDs was found on a wheel doesn't mean it can't be used on a
linear strip. It would just be a matter of finding the right HEDs to work on
your strip.
