My advice, (it's free, so consider what it's worth), is to use the freebie
program to get your feet wet. Most programs are similar enough to be able
to transition from one to another, as long as you don't try to go
back-and-forth (take my word for it!). Get reasonably fluent in the
language. Then, when you're ready for a first project, I'd suggest you make
a box, with an island, or pocket on top, and a bolt pattern of holes in the
island or pocket. You could maybe even tap some of the holes. This should
exercise most of the G-code & M-code functions you need to use for some
