Compaq has been (in)famous for its custom way of doing things. Instead
of the usual bios setup Compaq writes a small (8 to 32mb) partition on
the disk and handles all the setup stuff from there. If someone blew
that away by doing a normal Win install then the machine will be very
hard to make changes to the bios for things like CD boot. Best bet is to
get the Restore CD that Compaq sent with the machine and let it reformat
the disk and replace the system partition. I beieve these boot images
are on the Compaq web site- most of their drivers etc are there for
download.
Try hitting F8 while the macine is booting and has the big red Compaq
logo up- that should boot the system partition if its still there. Of
course some machine also used F10 or <del> as the boot key.
