Here's a good link which covers the theory of how limit switches work when
controlling DC motors. In this particular example they're being used to
control Lego devices, but the theory still holds.

For non-DC motors or for servos/steppers, I believe that the limit/home
switches are inputs to the motor control circuit, or possibly even the PC
driving the motor control circuit.
