Hi Bill,

7x10 is the name on the box. : )

it really does allow 7 inch swing over the ways, if you hold the part
from the inside. but stock over the carrage is limited to about
2.25 inches. The HF 7x10 is measured from the face of the chuck, so
when you add the jaws, you get less, closer to 9"

Grizzley/ENCO/MicroMark and Homier sell 7x12 and are closer to 11"

To measure the lathe, one would remove the chuck, and put in a dead
center in the headstock, pull the tailstock back unitl the rear edge
was at the end of the ways and the tailstock was withdrawn as far as
it would go. then measure betweenthe centers. aka center to center.

when putting Steppers on these small lathes, you can probably get by
with a direct drive on the cross slide and from what I have seen so
far, the choice method is to put a stepper on the leadscrew and let
the carrage stay locked.

if you require thread cutting, it can be done in a number of ways.
but that would be another topic.
