Have you read the ST "Applications of Monilithic Bridge
Drivers" application note? I've stashed a copy over
on my web site at:

A Google search for "L293AN.pdf" will probably yield additional
hits.

In the application note they talk about how to parallel the
outputs a L298 (page2) and how to connect an L297 to an
L298 (page 10).

I've substituted a MicroChp PIC16F628 for the L297. This allows
me a little more control over what is going on. Also, switching
pins around is frequently (but not always) just a matter of
changing a few definitions in the microcontroller source code.
