yes ,the RS232 is a prety common way to get programs into these older controls
you can use just about any terminal program that can send and recieve plain
ASCII text on the PC serial port ,the old terminal program from win3.1 works
well ,hyperterm from win9x CAN work but its a pain to use

there are also some programs made just for CNC up/downloading
I was just using Palm CNC on our older Okuma and Citizen lathes
today ,worked like a charm

the hard part is finding the documentation for the control
some of them use non standard pinouts others need a null modem cable
and some use a straight thru cable (the null cable is the best bet )
and the controls sometimes use strange port settings like 7E2 with hardware
flow control
