Separate ground

I am hooking up a Miller 250DX TIG welder and am connecting the
welder to a separate ground (8ft copper rod drilled into the ground).
If the mains (200 amp 60Hz), from which I get my power, spike, will I
damage the welder? If the power on my welder spikes will I damage the
other appliances on the mains? Do I need to connect the two grounds?
By the way, this question links to CAM through the CNC gantry system
on which my tig is attached.
