Figure 20mA for the current and 5V for the LED

If you are going to do this, make sure you have a resistor in series
with your LED before you place it across the line. Allow 20 mA of
current thru the LED. At 36VDC, the resistor should be about 1.8K
(36VDC/.02A). Use a 1W resistor.
