I am wild tonight :)
Here is another idea - I even think I once did a few experiments
with this - a long time ago.
On a simple disk, put on a charge capacitor, or do it on the step
input. You may get a measure of speed. Then add a few opamps and
circuits to this. When the step motor has I high step rate, you
can use this signal to control a large transistor in the power
lines, and increase the voltage. This can make the motor run at a
higher step rate before loosing steps.
