What you want to do is split the bleed resistor, too, so it
keeps the two caps balanced. As long as the caps have the
same rated capacitance, and you increase the voltage safety
factor a bit, it will work fine. note that if you put two 20,000 uF
capacitors in series, you end up with 10,000 uF at twice the
voltage.
