You must be getting +5 V power from an external power source, and
the output drivers in the computer's parallel port are protecting themselves
by shunting external voltage to ground. The protection circuits may be
allowing a marginal current to flow through the opto-isolators, such that
the Gecko senses a step pulse part of the time, and no step pulse at other
times. this would cause the drive to move on its own.
