Hi Bob,
When was that issue printed?
I will be doing that changeover eventually. I have started with
smaller steppers just to learn about it and gain confidence.
I use the L297/L298 controllers. They are excellent combination.
I got the PC layouts from the net (from Hannes Wedemeyer web page)
and printed them out on the PCB and etched them. Took me a whole day,
not very cost effective, but the experience was worth it.
I will next use MosFET "boosters" to be able to fully energize the
400+OzIn motors.
Eventually I will end up using the Geckodrive servo modules (they
seem to be the best cost/quality) and DC motors.

Stay in touch Bob. We may yet help eachother out.
