Jake,

Don't worry about the backlash. Gates GT series has esentially none if
properly tensioned.

These seem to have about the best registration accuracy as well. For short
belts it is about 0.004" according to Gates. If this is a +/- spec (they
don't say)
that makes 0.008". That might sound like a good bit, but consider a typical
0.2"/rev lead ballscrew. With a 2" pulley diameter 0.008" tangientially on
it
corresponds to 0.2* 0.008/PI*2= 0.00025" of carriage error. Not much.

In addition to lowering speed gearing down reduces the effective load
inertia
and improves the acceleration, particularly if the load equivalent moment
of inertia is more than the motor armature.

I should mention though that I am cutting some plastics at 180 ipm.
