glass scale line count

I am realtivley new to this group and am learning a lot from the
daily post.
I have a question regarding line count and resolution on linear
scales in general and anilam scales in particular. I currently am
converting a vertical mill that had an anilam controll that died to a
pc based system. I am using gecko 340 drivers and have interfaced
them with the original anilam glass scales. The line spacing specs
for these scales from anilam is .02mm which gives me 1270 lines per
inch. As I read through the post I understand that I should get 4
counts per line which would give 5080 steps per inch. However I
curently have my setting in M5 at 2540 spi. Is the fact that the
gecko only uses the A&B lines for encoder input the reason that I am
only gettin 2 counts per line or am I missing something else. Any
idea's would be greatly appreciated
