I doubt wood dust is as bad as carbon dust, but I have seen most shops
tape up the whole machine with black bags when cutting carbon.

Wood dust will dry the oil of your slides though, at the very least
you'll
have to relubricate afterwards.

A common material for prototypes is Ciba RenShape, but I think
it is a bit expensive for practice cuts.
