I've read quite a bit of Don's stuff and he mentions this idea many
times but without many specifics. I've always wondered how they
would compare to normal large steppers. Not as many steps/rev and
they require a specialized three-phase driver... but the price is
right.

One of Don's favorite topics is using postscript to generate
a "flutfile" that would send individual step commands to a cnc
machine via serial link. I don't think knows you can convert
postscript to g-code and run it on any CNC software you want.
