I posted this to rec.crafts.metalworking and thought it might be of interest here, as well.

I was just looking at Chipmaker's web site and reading about his shop in the
carport.

To help with chips in the house, put a chunk of old carpet where you will
walk across it before going into the house (shag works well for this). It
will help snag chips from your shoes and can be tossed when full.

Old carpet has many uses like this. My father-in-law lives in Titusville, FL
(right beside Cape Kennedy) and he drags old carpet behind his riding mower
to snag sand spurs. He used to be over-run with them, but now his place is
almost clear.

I have used it like a mulch where I wanted to keep weeds out, like in the
garden or under a fence. It will last several years out in the elements and
then rot away. I just put the new piece on top.

It makes a good mat to throw down when you have to crawl under a car. It
cushions your back from gravel and when you drop that inevitable nut or
bolt, it is easier to see on the carpet. I like to use commercial (low pile)
carpet for this.

Commercial carpet is also good for fatigue mats in front of your machine
tools (I like the kind that has a foam rubber backing for this). I use
several layers (cut, not folded to trip over), and use the shop vac on them
when I clean up (I've already got it out cleaning the machine). I don't try
to get every chip, just the ones that come up easy. When it gets clogged I
turn it over, too clogged, and I pitch it.

Old carpet makes a great low cost welding screen, as long as you keep it out
of the sparks.<GRIN> Just tack together a quick and dirty frame and drape it
over. Kids like to use these to play house.

I have seen shag hung on walls to dampen noise.

If you keep a supply of old carpet around, you will find other uses for it.
