This may be double posted as Yahoo just burped on an on-line attempt. Apologies if it is a dupe.

A teletype (original TTY device) has no display. Teletype is a brand name, like IBM or Frigidaire (or Frieden, a competitor, the Flexowriter). It only output to paper. One character at a time. It was the primary CNC code input device for many years as it could output to rolls of paper approximately 8 1/2 inches wide with ink and at the same time output to rolls of paper 1 inch wide with punched holes. Marvel of marvels some could even read a punched paper tape and print the characters with the ink directly to paper mode. (Sorry no memory buffer available for editing, use the hand punch and splicer for that)

The TTY interface was usually referred to as a 20 ma current loop, it is similar to RS232 in scope, but not characteristics. Can you say 11 characters per second, 110 baud?

My definition of the subject is probably dated and has been usurped somewhen by an uninformed geek who never had to send telexes by tty ;-) Just like certain flavors of G-codes on certain controllers, that don't work the way the standard defines them.
