"A teletype (original TTY device) has no display". The little dots of
ink on the paper are the display (hardcopy)!
"TTY interface" can have more then one meaning? "A word means just what
I want it to mean, no more, no less" (Lewis Carroll).
"usurped somewhen by an uninformed geek"? That's a little harsh.
"TTY" is not a registered trademark, as far as I know. If it is, so
what! Brand names that are in common use to refer to a type of product
often "loose" their "company" significance, xerox, fridge, teletype,
etc. over the years.

It was the primary CNC code input device for many years as it could output to rolls of paper approximately 8 1/2 inches wide with ink and at the same time output to rolls of paper 1 inch wide with punched holes. Marvel of marvels some could even read a punched paper tape and print the characters with the ink directly to paper mode. (Sorry no memory buffer available for editing, use the hand punch and splicer for that)
