Hi all,
I don't know how many people have heard of, let alone used Blender
3D, but it's a 3D design package that's very, very close to going
open source. It's written in C++ and also uses Python scripting. It
runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. One downside is that it has a
quite quirky interface.
Anyway, I bring this up because I think that it could well be a
possible starting point for an open source CAM project, etc.

Usual Disclaimer; no connections, etc. I don't even use this program,
but have donated $50 to their fundraising anyway.
