BDI question and Knoppix plug

Once BDI is installed, does it ever need the CD-ROM drive again? I ask
because my CNC PC is in kind of a slim mini-ATX case with no 5-1/4 drive
bay. I have hooked up a CD-ROM temporarily with the case open, and could
again to install BDI to play with it, but I wouldn't want to make a habit
of it.
Desmond Crisis on CNET Radio is on a Linux kick. After hearing him
mention Knoppix one day, I downloaded it (thank goodness for access to a
broadband connection). It's a 700+ MB CD-ROM disk image, and Knoppix is a
distribution of Debian Linux that will run right from the CD-ROM. It is
fantastic (this coming from a mainly DOS guy who has never touched Linux
before). I have played with it on four computers, and it has
auto-detected the hardware on all four, even the USB mouse on my
daughter's PC. It has Open Office, KDE desktop, a whole ton of
applications (including the best PC planetarium program I've ever seen)
and you can apparently install it onto the hard drive if you want. Other
than that, it doesn't touch the HD except to make a swapfile on PC's with
not much memory. It's from Klaus Knopper, a German engineer, and is
available from http://www.knoppix.org It is really really slick!
Best regards,
Randy
