You might want to look into the L297/L298 setup. L297 takes step/dir
pulses and produces phase signals (etc.) to drive the L298, which is a
driver for the motor. Loads of schematics on the web, and on
http://www.st.com/stonline/books/ascii/docs/1679.htm. Currently my L297
are on back order from Mouser, they have good prices though. They also
have heatsinks for the L298 (called a Multiwatt package). They also have
low ohm resistors for current sense (hint: use several parallel cheapy
resistors, rather than one expensive high-power one). They have the fast
diodes used to protect the L298 from the motor as well.
