Hi Doug,

From my experience which is rather limited, you have a couple of
options:

Stepper - use a step/direction controller and a PC to vary speed
DC Motor - use a Pulse Width Modulation Speed controller (PWM)
AC Motor - Use a TRIAC Speed controller (do a search for Router Speed
Controller). They can be bought prebuilt for $35 Canadian through
Busy Bee Tools http://www.busybeetools.com
