You can purchase a Sherline X-Y base that is CNC ready for about $300. You
would have to rig a way to hold the pen above the base, but that should be
easy. After you are finished with it, you can sell it on eBay where it will
go for about 75% of your purchase price. I just purchased one about a month
ago, and I use it to swap with my milling machine when I need to do
maintenance. That way, I have very little down time. I might be ready to
purchase another one in a month or two, let me know if you end up buying
one.
