The thing is this...
Chopper drivers allows you to run at a higher voltage without burning the
motors. If you don't use chopper drivers, the current drain raises rather
slow when a coil is powered up. By using a chopper drive, you yank the power
up to 4 to 20 times the rating on the motor, and this makes the current rise
much faster. Therefor you can run the stepper faster (more steps pr. sec,
typically 3-4 times faster) then with a conventional power source.
