You can chuck directly on it. The balls ride flanks of the threads and
their action zone is not affected by holding the peaks. Your main problem
is centering it. I did the same thing here as you're planning, and I read
the bottom of groove for concentricity. You have to sweep the bottom of
groove at the four points corresponding to your jaws, and that means you
have to keep approx up with it as you rotate spindle to each checking
point. It's not that hard to do by hand if you're slow and careful not to
bottom the indicator as you go.
