Need info/Advice on CNC Router

I'm building a CNC router for a school project and have hit some snags.
I've been lurking for awhile and hopefully you can help. It's a class
project so I'm not trying to spend lots of $$ or cut titanium with .00001
precision.
I designed a Gantry setup with about 25"X, 30"Y and 5"Z. Linear Rods with
brash bushings, threaded rod for movement.
Mostly I am having trouble finding a way to control it. I have a pentium
166 laptop and figure I'll use TurboCNC. Can anyone suggest what type of
motors I should get to control XYZ? It does not need 100ipm, it just needs
to work. Slow is OK. I'd like to use a PC ATX style power supply.
It seems everyone suggests using higher voltages than the motors are rated.
Can I use 12 volts with let's say a 5 volt Vexta motor?
I'm also thinking about using the Xylotex or Stepper3 controllers since they
have the drivers onboard it seems which will greatly cut down on cost and
problems.
Anyone have any suggestions? Need more info? I'm using the school's
machine shop so making mounts for the motors etc is no problem and expected.
I also am planning on using a regular laminate motor for cutting.
Thanks in advance.
