Don't be scared of having a 3 phase spindle motor. You just get a VFD (also
called an inverter drive). Virtually all of then connect to 1 phase 220 and
puts out 3 phase 220. Depending upon the model you frequently have to get a
larger unit compared to running it on 3 phase. The factory manual will tell
what you need to do as using them on one phase is an approved use. Not only
does it give you 3 phase it also gives you soft start, braking on run down,
and variable speed. All in all it is the way to go.

You are correct on the controller/motor side if you are using any of the
popular drive set-ups. There are some industrial machines that have the
power supplies set up with 3 phase transformers so if you are doing a
conversion of some big iron you do need to watch out for that.
