JJ,
I have done some work with servo-controlled cutting.
I can monitor the current consumption in the spindle I have now, and change
the feed rates to stay within a power rating.
This can help prevent:
motor stall and subsequent smoke
tool overheating and aluminum melting
What I'm looking for now is either a pre-made spindle I can use with
appropriate speed for steel work, or a straightforward design that I stand
a chance of building myself.
From lurking on this list, it seems that many people have experience with
CNC-ing mill-drills, Sherlines, Taigs, and other small manual
machines. I'm hoping that someone has a recommendation.
I've been scouring manufacturers' sites, and have found them very short on
performance specifications, including statements like:
"This machine will make 0.375" deep cuts with a 0.5" end mill in
mild steel."
Probably I'm too green about machining to know how silly this questions
sounds, but how does one know what the capabilities of a converted machine
will be?
