Just a thought Carl,
machines don't listen that is true but the do feel. As a load
increases the current demand increases, by putting a current sensitive
circut in line with the motor signials could be generated that would
inform the system as to what is going on and respond to it.

Not knowing a whole lot about this CNC'ing stuff my self this is just
a thought from an old demo i used to make on cutlery to demo how long
diferent knives would hold an edge. we just watched an amp gage and
counted slices off a block of wood to see whos knife held up longest,
