ball screw??

I am afraid my trainning from so many years ago was lacking in what a
ball screw is. It is possable that i do really know what one is but
either i have forgoten or know it by some other name.

Sooooo what is a ball screw and what is it used for, why does it sound
so necessary for CNC machining?
