Sometimes VM seems to open up in “hidden part model” mode. Try clicking on the yellow “L” shaped icon on the left hand toolbar. It could be that your STL model is just hidden from view.

I have been pleased with VM version 4. It is an incredible piece of software that works well with Rhino.
