Wire Gauge for Stepper Motors

I'm wiring up a stepper motor to a driver and the max current through this
motor is 1.5 amps (the driver has a current limit). I have some very nice 26
AWG stranded color coded wire that I want to use, but one chart I looked at
said that 26 gauge can handle up to 4 amps (seems high) and another said
0.361 amps (seems very low). I was wondering what the group consensus was on
this. The wires on the stepper are too short and I need to make an
extension. The existing motor wires are somewhere between 20 AWG and 26 AWG
it seems.
Thanks,
Kory
