Surface Grinder conversion

I have a small, hand operated surface grinder (about 9"x5" travel).
It's not very exciting taking off metal operating it by hand :-)
Has anyone done a CNC conversion of one? Are there pitfalls/problems to
watch out for?
G-Code wouldn't seem to be needed. I was thinking of using a small single
board computer to drive the three axis via Gecko drives. I'm thinking of
simple functions like "grind this X/Y area to a depth of Z in steps of
Delta" ....
Cheers,
Chuck Hackett
