That is exactly what Jon is saying. He has been running full servo
motion systems on his Bridgeport for several years using various releases
of the EMC software. There are many similar full servo machines in
regular use around the world.

The EMC is different from those other programs that use parts of its
software in that it run with a real-time version of the Linux OS rather
than running under dos or using some variant of MS-Windows. All of the
software used is either public domain or open source. By using this OS
we are able to multi-task and assign priorities to all of the things that
need to happen during the running of a machine tool.

the first parts of the handbook. If you decide that you want the BDI
