2 1/2d (vinyl cutter)

anybody have any ideas for implementing 2 1/2d? I recently
inherited a vinyl cutter from another sign shop that was
at the wrong end of a fire extinguisher. (it wasn't on fire,
but it got covered in crud and in ins. co. wrote it off)

The controller is done for due to corrosion, but I have a
good, basic mechanism to use.(after I've disassembled and bead
blasted all the crud off)

my first thought is to use the z direction bit to trigger power
to the voice coil actuator, but in the past, I've had issues with
doing that.

any suggestions?
