Before you go out and spend more money you might want to go over to
the mill_drill group and look up solutions for repositiong your head
after moving it up and down. One solution that is quick and easy is
to mount one of the cheap laser pointers on the head and project it
against a wall several feet away. Draw a line through the red dot
and now you have a reference point to re-zero the head.
IMHO you would be better off finding an older CNC commercial knee
mill that has a bad controller and doing the retrofit to PC control.
I fought the mill/drill delima for several years until I got a full
sized Gorton mill "donated" to me. The CNC conversion has been a
journey of learning but with just a DRO installed I can do precison
work that was not possible on my M/D (too much flex and backlash).
