Sounds like the current limiting/adjustment circuit in your bench
supply may have a problem. The over current situation in a current
controlled supply should cut the voltage thus limiting total current
to the adjusted amount. Try setting full current limit, adjust full
voltage and increase current to the board and see what happens...
