Help with CnC for school

I have loooked around at various web sites. I have found many
different types of designs. I have a few questions.

1. Has anyone used motors from flatbed scanners to control a mill
axis?
2. How do you compensate for different steppers to maitain axis
controls.

3. If a motor has not emough torque can you gear it down to avoid
stalling
