They are likely too small to give you the torque you need.

Electrically you handle it from the drives and power supply. Each drive
is set (how depends upon the type and model of drive) for the electrical
requirement of the motors. On some of the old non-chopper type drives
you may need to use separate power supplies for each motor and use
different voltages also.

This can be a problem with stepper motors. As the RPM increases the
torque drops off rapidly. In some (many) cases you will actually get
less torque with a geared down motor than with a direct drive. All
depends upon the drives, the gearing, the particular motors, the power
supply voltage, etc.
