I buy mine from W. M. Berg. The pulleys go for $18 to $30 or so.
Unless you find exactly
what you want in a surplus catalog, I think you'll end up paying similar
prices. Some people
make their own pulleys. If you look into how they are made, how much
material goes into
them (and how much ends up as chips on the floor) you should see that
these prices are
reasonable in small volume. If you needed 10,000, you could get a
better price, I'm sure.
If you used molded plastic ones, those could also be made a lot cheaper.
If somebody die
casts them, those could be cheaper, too. But steel and aluminum pulleys
are mostly machined
from bar stock.
